GER 853 Update

5th October 2017

A major mile stone on the underframe of GER 853 was reached this week in six months we have gone from a rusty underframe with no wheels. To an underframe painted, wheeled and with the final the spring mounts being fitted this week, enabled it to be moved on its own wheels for the first time in 90 years. The underframe was then moved down the shed 10 feet to enable the continuous draw gear to be slid in from the Holt end then the underframe was pushed back to near the body. The continuous draw gear was completed by the addition of the centre cage with the rubbers and the draw hooks the assembly was then tensioned by the adjusting nuts. From the photos you can see the handbrake column in place with the bevel gear mechanism bolted on to the underframe. Still a long way to go before the body can be refitted but a very positive point in the restoration.

Members Day

2nd October 2017

Time Table for Saturday 7th October Members, due to this being the first time in the Societies history that all the steam locos, owned by it, are working together, at 16:55 there will be a 'cavalcade' of all Society owned steam engines leaving Sheringham, light engine to Weybourne.

As ever, there is the usual caveat, 'providing nothing happens beyond our control'.

Also, don't forget to bring your old five pound notes, which stopped being legal currency earlier this year and the old pound coins that stop being legal tender on the 15th October, we will happily take them as donations, there will be collecting buckets at various points around the railway.

WD Naming Ceremony

21st July 2017

The Trustees of M&GN Society are delighted to announce that our WD 2-10-0 locomotive 90775 is to be named on Saturday 9 September at Sheringham with full military honours. 90775 will be named "The Royal Norfolk Regiment" and is the first mainline steam, diesel or electric locomotive to bear this name.

Society Chairman, Neil Sharpe, says "This is something of which the Society and the Regiment are extremely proud. The naming honours generations of local soldiers who served in the regiment over almost 400 years and so cements a uniquely strong local connection between the locomotive, the North Norfolk Railway and our county."

Discussions with the successor regiment, The Royal Anglians, have been going on for some time and, with their full support, the resulting event promises to be impressive and colourful. Not only will it have the full military honours available to the Royal Anglians but will also see many old soldiers present to pay their respects to what we hope they will come to see as "their locomotive" and undoubtedly tell their stories.

The naming will take place at Sheringham NNR station at 12:00 on Saturday September 9th and will be followed by a special train taking guests to Holt and back, hauled by the newly named locomotive.

Wagon and Torpedo

17th July 2017

The Royal Navy Armaments Depot 269 wagon built 1940 has been completed ready for the freight train, this was purchased several years ago as a underframe for M&GN No 12 brake van.

When the lorry delivered it to the NNR at Sheringham GER 853 was on the PMV Flat and the M&GN No3 Picnic saloon was a grounded body, we decided to make the saloon mobile so the GER 853 was swopped to the RNAD 269 wagon and the saloon to the PMV flat.

Once the bodies were swopped we realised the RNAD wagon was the perfect length for GER 853 so the plan was changed and eventually we used one of the two pipe wagons for the underframe for M&GN No12 brake van.

When eventually we started GER 853 the original frame was discovered to be in better condition than first thought, so the RNAD frame was now surplus so the decision was taken to paint in RNAD livery for the freight train.

Oxford blue was the chosen colour, and as it was built for the propellant factory in Caewent Mon a suitable load was decided upon, as all MOD projects this was done in total secrecy until completion.

A 21 foot torpedo built from plywood and wooden slats covered in thin steel sheet with a mock propeller end and a hot water cylinder as a nose cone covered in car body filler to add to the effect.

This has been loaded on the wagon on wooden segments with 3 double chains and an end stop (in case of violent shunting!) the chains ex Hither Green Southern region were out of our spares stock which only came to light recently during a sort out.

At present we are awaiting confirmation for an order for 50 of these torpedo's for North Korea.

Iron Horse Appeal

17th March 2017

Following three donations this week amounting to some £2000, and the £21,000 received from the Weybourne Shop for sale of donated items, we are pleased to announce the WD Appeal now stands at £49150, just £850 short of the target. Wouldn't it be great if by the end of the month the £50,000 had been reached? If you think you could send a few pounds to make this happen it would be very much appreciated. Payment may be made by cheque to the Society or by Paypal here.
