B12 Steals the Show at G&WSR

27th May 2013

The Society's B12 4-6-0 no.8572 stole the show at the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway's four day Cotswold Steam Celebration gala over the bank holiday weekend.

The visit to Gloucestershire was the B12's first departure from the North Norfolk Railway since returning to steam in March 2012 and will be her only visit to another railway this year.

The locomotive was supported by a number of Society volunteers, including Society Chairman Neil Sharpe, Society Vice-Chairman Ash Barrs, Society Locomotive Engineer Keith Ashford, Society Treasurer Tony Dewey and Society Secretary David Wright and wife Maureen.

The B12 will return to the NNR next week and is likely to be pressed into service straight away.

In Pictures: J15 2002 - 2013

26th May 2013

Our veteran J15, no.7564 bowed out with a final week of steaming, culminating in her last turn on Monday 6th May 2013. Driver Ben Boggis and Fireman James Redburn took the privileged last turn and gave the locomotive a fine send off.

The J15 was one of the first locomotives purchased by the M&GN Joint Railway Society from BR and arrived at Sheringham on 2nd June 1967 along with the B12. The J15 was the most logical locomotive for the Society to restore and returned to steam in August 1977. She went on to work many trains and hauled the first passenger train up to Holt on the opening of the Kelling extension in 1989 before withdrawal.

It wasn't until 2002 that the J15 finally steamed again, thanks to the efforts of John Durrant and the late Roger Heasman. She returned with a virtually new boiler, manufactured by Pridhams and with the BR number 65462. The loco earnt a good reputation as a reliable performer and visited many other heritage railways during her 10 year ticket. The non-exhaustive list included the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway (2002), Beamish Museum (2003), Great Central Railway (2003), Barrow Hill Roundhouse (2005, 2007), Kent & East Sussex Railway (2007), Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway (2007), North Yorkshire Moors Railway (2008) and Avon Valley Railway (2011).

During the J15's last ticket, she has appeared in a number of guises. She was first outshopped in BR Black with a small BR emblem, which soon gave way to signwritten "British Railways". On two occasions she was repainted into NE black for the 1940s weekend events on the NNR, before settling back into BR Black with a small BR emblem. Following the granting of a boiler ticket extension and retubing in December 2011 she was repainted into LNER black and numbered 7564 and looked the part alongside the B12 and with the Quad-Art set.

Sadly the J15's time came up in May this year and her boiler ticket extension expired on the 6th May. She now sits in Weybourne Yard, waiting for overhaul to commence.

If you would like to support the J15, there are a number of ways you can do this. You can Join the Society, Join the Loco Club, Join the J15 "200" Club or make a donation (Cheques made payable to "M&GNJRS"). We're also always open to helping hands, so please consider volunteering with the Society. Help can be gifted in a number of ways, from practical mechanical labour through to fundraising and promotion. All help is gratefully received and will help to see our J15 steam once again.

Muddle and Go Nowhere Bar Returns

22nd May 2013

The Society's Muddle and Go Nowhere bar car, housed inside our restored 1937 Gresley Buffet (RB) makes a welcome return over all three days of the North Norfolk Railway Diesel Gala, which this year is organised by the Weybourne Traction Group and held on the 14th, 15th & 16th June.

The bar will be serving a range of draught real ale, bottled beers and other refreshments, as well as Society merchandise. Timetables for the event can be downloaded from the NNR website for Friday/Saturday and Sunday. Note you can find out which trains host the bar by the small beer glass symbol above departures.

The bar car will also be in business for both evening 'Beerex' and Fish & Chip specials, which run on Friday night with Class 37 D6732 and on Saturday night with visiting Class 33 33108. More information on ticketing for the gala and for evening 'Beerex' trains can be found on the North Norfolk Railway Website. Please note, a 15% discount is available on tickets purchased in advance. B12 Departs for Cheltenham

21st May 2013

The M&GN Joint Railway Society's B12 4-6-0 locomotive, no.8572 has departed the North Norfolk Railway for a weekend in Gloucestershire.

The locomotive is visiting the G&WSR Railway, which is holding it's four-day 'Cotswold Steam Celebration' over the long weekend on the 24th, 25th, 26th & 27th May. Our loco joins several other 'big four' examples over the event, which is the first gala the G&WSR has held since a major embankment slippage was repaired. As part of the million pound appeal, the Society waived the steaming fee for J15 7564, which ran 'driver for a fiver' turns at Sheringham between trains to raise money for the appeal.

In readiness for the weekend, the locomotive was given a clean and polish by the Society's growing cleaning team, led by 'chargehand' Stuart Clarke. If you would like to join the gang, or find out more information, please see the Volunteering page. After cleaning, the B12 was towed to Sheringham by Class 25 25057 in readiness for collection by Alleley's Heavy Haulage.

Several Society volunteers will be travelling to the G&WSR to support the B12's visit. Loco engineer Keith Ashford will assist with crew familiarisation for G&WSR volunteer drivers and firemen whilst several other hands will be running a Society sales and promotion stand. We welcome all Society members who will be visiting the event to come and say a friendly hello. Remember that B12 Wandering 1500 Club members are entitled to free travel behind 8572 as part of their membership conditions.

Sheringham East Update

3rd May 2013

Following the fire in Sheringham East signal box on 22nd April, inspections have been made to the condition of the building. There has been some damage to the rear of the box so work will start once again to refurbish the structure.

We are extremely lucky that no-one came to harm in this incident, which was caused by a car on fire which was parked below the signal box. This spread to two other adjacent cars, the fencing and the signal box. Without the prompt actions of the public in calling the emergency services and the Norfolk Fire service, the signal box would have been lost or damaged extensively. Our deepest thanks go to all concerned.

Regardless of this setback, work will still continue to restore the signal box and repairs are already underway.
