Class 31 Indicator Blind Overhauled

The continuing restoration of our Class 31, D5631 continues, with further progress made after the overhaul of a headcode indicator blind has been completed.

The mechanism and the blinds were included in part of our bulk purchase of Class 31 spares but required attention to bring them up to standard. This first mechanism will go into the Holt end cab, where the headcode indicator box has already been reinstated. Until now, a painted board has been in place.

Our Class 31 was originally built with headcode indicator boxes, but had them removed in May 1986 when the locomotive went into Doncaster works for 'life extension' refurbishment. It was during this time that the engine's valances and steam heat boiler were also removed and high intensity headlamps were fitted.

Following recent work to improve reliability, which has included purchasing and fitting a new set of batteries, the next tasks are to plan bodywork repairs to the Sheringham end cab, with a view to reinstating the other headcode indicator, removing the high intensity headlamp and replacing the bufferbeam valances.

Muddle Bar Back for Steam Gala

The M&GN Joint Railway Society's 1937 LNER Restaurant Buffet - dubbed the Muddle and Go Nowhere bar car - will be in service for all three days of the North Norfolk Railway's Autumn Steam gala, offering a fantastic selection of draught real ales from the barrel along with cider, wines and other refreshments.

The bar car has undergone a renaissance recently with extensive works to refresh the vehicle. The bar car now has capacity to hold more firkin barrels, giving a greater selection of real ales and we will be offering draught cider for the first time over the gala too.

Alongside the daily service, the bar car will be in service for the two evening Beerex and Fish & Chip specials on Friday and Saturday evening. Hauled by Tornado on Friday night and Oliver Cromwell on Saturday night, the bar will be open till late. The Beerex and Fish & Chip specials kick off with the 1654 departure from Sheringham and run for three round trips with Fish & Chip served on the 1922 departure from Sheringham. The last trip departs Sheringham at 2045, arriving back at 2145 with ample time to make the 2217 and 2347 connections to Norwich.

For passengers with two and three day rover tickets, there is no additional fare for the Beerex trains. For passengers with a one day rover ticket, an additional fare of £3 applies. For passengers with no Gala ticket, an additional fare of £10 applies. Fish & Chip vouchers are £7 and can be purchased from the Sheringham General Office by 1500 on the day of travel.

M&GN Horse Dray Restoration

Restoration on an original Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway horse dray, originally from Norwich City station and thought to be least 80 years old has begun.

The dray was donated to the M&GN Joint Railway Society by the Norfolk Museums Service after an evaluation of their collection. For many years it has been kept out in the open at the Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse museum near Dereham, where the condition of the woodwork has deteriorated. Now in the Society's collection, the dray has been taken to a workshop near Aylsham where restoration is already underway.

The restoration is being undertaken by a traditional wheel wright, using the same time honoured methods that would have been used to repair the dray throughout its working life. When restored, the dray will be on display at Holt as part of the ever expanding goods yard complex.

B12 for Autumn Steam Gala

3rd August 2013

The M&GN Joint Railway Society's flagship engine, LNER B12 8572 will be working over all three days of the North Norfolk Railway Grand Autumn Steam Gala on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September 2013.

The final lineup has now been confirmed and promises to be a real spectacle. Three visiting locomotives have been confirmed - 60163 Tornado, 70013 Oliver Cromwell and 777 Sir Lamiel. These engines will join Black 5 45337 which has now arrived back at the North Norfolk Railway and freshly overhauled BR Standard 4MT 76084 which will be working her first NNR steam gala. Our B12 and resident 'Taff Tank' 5619 will also be in steam.

The weekend promises to be a fantastic event. Alongside our B12, our 1924 Quad-Art set will be in service along with several of our restored freight wagons in the demonstration goods train. The Muddle and Go Nowhere Bar car is also in service and will be serving a fantastic variety of Real Ales and other refreshments, complimented by the North Norfolkman Restaurant Buffet which will be serving hot and cold food.

Wissington on the 'Middy'

2nd August 2013

East Anglia's last working steam locomotive, Hudswell-Clarke 0-6-0 saddle tank Wissington will be running regularly in August on the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway.

The MSLR or 'Middy' is located near to Stowmarket, on the former Mid-Suffolk branch. The charming little station of Brockford is the setting for the Railway, which operates a half mile demonstration line. You can find out more about the 'Middy' via the MSLR website.

Wissington will be steaming every Wednesday and Sunday, along with additional dates on Thursday 15th and Monday 26th August. Over the back end of the August Bank Holiday weekend, the MSLR will be holding their annial Rail 'n' Ale event on Sunday 25th and Monday 26th.

The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society is the supporting charity of (and major shareholder in) the North Norfolk Railway, which operates a 5¼ mile heritage railway from Sheringham to Holt.

The Society actively works to preserve, display and operate a wide range of historical artefacts which include four steam locomotives and many unique carriages and wagons.
